New Regulations for Electricians and Careers as an Electrician, United Kingdom

In 1831, Michael Faraday found a way to produce what he called "electricity waves." His technique using a coil of wire and magnets is still used in power plants today. Almost 50 years later, Godalming in Surrey became the first city to have a public electricity supply. Electricity was used to provide light in shops and houses and to illuminate the city streets.

The next 50 years saw the introduction of a wide range of household appliances in the homes of the United Kingdom, including the kitchen, refrigerator, washing machine, kettle, vacuum cleaner and television.

The use of electricity in homes and businesses creates the need for specialists who can take advantage of and work with this new source of available energy and, as a result, the electrician trade was created. In English jargon, electricians are often called "Sparky" or "Sparks."

In recent years there has been a growing concern about the number of deaths and injuries in the home caused by faulty wiring. In January 2005, new strict rules were introduced that prevent DIY enthusiasts from performing many electrical works in the house. The new construction regulation, Part P, requires owners to perform the work by a registered electrician who is competent to issue certificates of Construction Regulations or notify a local construction control body before starting any work and paying a fee for an inspection and a certificate after work it's complete.

There are a limited number of minor jobs to which the new regulations do not apply, but an owner should not start any electrical work without verifying the details of the regulations. Failure to comply can result in a large fine and, if vendor packages are introduced for the sale of the house, it is likely to be difficult to sell a house that contains electrical work for which the homeowner does not have the proper documentation. More importantly, performing electrical work yourself or allowing an unregistered electrician to make changes to your home's wiring could put you, your family and your home at risk.

An impact of these changes is that there is likely to be a greater need for registered electricians to do the job that homeowners would have previously commissioned. A first step for anyone interested in a career as an electrician is to contact a local electrician company and ask about work experience opportunities or positions as electricians in training.

For electricians who choose to work primarily in a domestic environment, the type of work they are likely to find is related to developments and improvements in the home, including wiring of old properties, performing electrical work in extensions, the movement of plugs and accessories electrical as part of the changes that are made in a room, for example In addition to a new kitchen.

Opportunities to specialize, perhaps combined with another specific skill, could involve working with alarms against intruders and the latest IT and home theater options. For more information about a career as an electrician, go to How to become an electrician.
